About Locking.se

Locking.se is an independent place for collecting and preserving knowledge about Locking and Campbellocking. Its purpose is to help today’s and future lockers discover the dance’s people, origins, movements and stories.

The story begins with Locking’s African American origins in Los Angeles and Don Campbell’s personal way of dancing, first called Campbellocking. From there, something larger grew through an entire community of creative people.

The dance travelled from clubs and social dance floors through Soul Train, the stage, television, film and music, across the United States and eventually around the world.

Locking.se brings together historical material, pioneers’ own voices, steps and terminology, groups, images and personal stories. No single voice can contain the whole history, so different documented perspectives should be able to meet here.

Stories disappear when nobody asks, listens, documents and continues the conversation. The site should therefore keep growing and be corrected as new knowledge, more voices and stronger documentation become available.

The aim is not only to remember what came before, but to help future generations understand the culture they carry forward: energetic, funky, raw, playful and created within African American communities in the United States.
